However, with the evolution of technology, it has become possible to identify these malfunctions. Diagnostic 'suitcases' are therefore very popular with professionals and private individuals alike!
What is a diagnostic 'suitcase'?
A diagnostic 'suitcase' is first of all a misnomer. It should rather be called a diagnostic device. Originally, these diagnostic devices were stored in suitcases like the Renault XR25. Later on, diagnostic devices were stored in suitcases. The expression remained "passing a car in a suitcase".
Nowadays, a diagnostic device can come in different forms. It can be either a stand-alone device that is plugged directly into the car, or a communication interface between the car and a computer. The functions available are more or less numerous. It all depends on what you want to do. The main function of a diagnostic device is to diagnose faults on different vehicles, to tell why an engine warning light, an ABS light, an airbag light is on. Thousands of codes and definitions are therefore listed in order to quickly assess the state of the engine, ABS, airbag, automatic gearbox, etc. With a diagnostic device, it is also possible to reset a maintenance light (oil change, brake pads, etc.), code an ECU (e.g. add a coupling function), program an ECU (e.g. add a new function), and so on. ), programming an ECU (programming a NEW ECU according to a country or car options, changing the voice language of a navigation system, ...).
